Greetings from the Healthy Hoosiers CSA! This message is your reminder to pick up your box today. Please remember that all the boxes are the same, so simply choose one and enjoy it! Be sure to return your produce box next week if you took it with you this week, and to always leave them in a flattened stack.

Farm News:

Here is a note from one of the drop locations last week. The Farmer’s family writes one each week!

Hi! What lovely weather we’re having. We had a little sprinkle of rain on Sunday…more would be good. We have now planted fall pumpkins and squash in plug trays. Peas will be ready next week. Early tomatoes have little green ones hanging on, and we’re ready to plant more in the field. We planted more green beans and corn on Monday, and lima beans yesterday. Already we’re battling the weeds!

Good morning Everyone, and welcome back to another season with Scenic Hills produce Farm! This has been an exciting spring. The warm weather we had in March made it possible to till the soil and start planting much earlier than in the past recent years. But then it was cool in April, with frost several mornings, and that brought things back closer to the usual time zone. Green beans were hard to germinate in April, and the strawberry blooms froze, so, strawberries are really scarce this year. Blackberry stalks look extra nice, as do most of the spring crops. We look forward to a great season with God’s blessings!

CSA News:

As of this morning we have 69 official shares in the group. Remember that we have deliveries on Tuesdays and Thursdays this year, so pay attention to the news and information for your particular day. Tuesday deliveries are for North, Central and South while Thursdays are for both East locations. The deliveries may not be the exact same in a given week, but in general they are able to give everyone the same things, one group just might get it in a different week!

REMEMBER TO PICK UP YOUR COOKBOOK TODAY!!!!!

Farm News:

I posted a short note with news from the farm Tuesday morning. You can click here to read that, or check our Facebook page for the link. Keep an eye out when you go pick up your box, too. The farmer and his family often leave hand written notes at each location. I try to share some of the notes here each week, but it’s always nice to read them first hand, so watch for those. Also remember that this is the first week, so the boxes will be “lighter”. Do not worry if the first week or two are lighter, they fatten up quick as we get going in the season! New members shouldn’t be worried that boxes will be small all year, trust me…they won’t be! Check our Facebook photo album of 2011 pictures to get an idea of what to expect during the next 25 weeks, and get ready for some good eating! When I spoke to the farmer’s wife last night she said the warm weather in March encouraged the strawberries to bloom, but that the hard frost that came after caused some damage to them. They fearful they may be scare. We have some this week, but we’re not sure how many times we’ll get them this season. You can read more in my Farm News update on the site!

News from the Farm

Today is the first day of the 2012 season, and the weekly reminder for Tuesday deliveries will go out this morning. Until then I wanted to share some news from the farm. Mary, the Farmer’s wife, called last night to let me know what we’re getting this week, and to let me know how the crops are doing.

This is what she said:

Things are growing well this year!

In the East field they have candy onions, tomatoes, kale, broccoli, sugar snap pears, kohlrabi, cabbage, romaine lettuce and beans.

In the small garden near the house they have spring onions, lettuce mix, radishes, spinach, rhubarb, carrots and red beets.

In the South field they have potatoes, sweet corn, beans and swiss chard.

In the Green House they’ve started more tomatoes, romaine lettuce, peppers, cantaloupe, watermelon, parsley, basil, zucchini and cucumbers.

She said they also have peas blooming and that the blackberries are looking nice.

She did comment that she was worried the strawberries may be scarce this spring. She said that those warm weeks in March caused them to bloom early and that many of the plants had frost damage from those days of hard front in early April. She’s hoping we’ll get some soon, but it’s hard to tell.

So, that’s just a bit about what’s going on at the farm.

When you pick up your box each week, watch for a hand-written note from the farm. They often send one along, providing additional updates!

Enjoy the season!
